Evelyn Glennie blog post


The main thing that I'll remember about Evelyn Glennie's performance is that she's deaf. She can't hear anything through her ears, and yet she makes perfect notes and knows exactly what each note will sound like. That's freaking Beethoven-status. That was absolutely amazing that she could do that.

It was very very intense listening to her play her piece. She made music that moved through your soul, just by the sound on the marimba. She could alter her playing so that it sounded like an organ, instead of a mechanical ding. Not to mention, she could make single notes, even while using slight cords to produce the organ sound.

The elements that influenced the audience's impression of the sound were how loud she played, how hard she hit the keys, and how she had her arms positioned. If her arms were positioned really tightly and close to her body, then it would be a harsh, metallic sounding note. But if she held her arms freely and loosely, then the note would reflect that.

By that, she meant that everyone feels the music differently. Some people feel it in there hands, some through their ears, some through their heads. I feel the music in my head, which is where I compose most of my music and listen to songs. After enough times of hearing the song, I can listen to the entire thing, drums, piano, guitar and all in my head exactly as I would hear it from a video.

Your guide to the year in science: Technology

Tons of things fall into the deep crevice of technology: Cars, games, computers, even washing machines reside here! But one of the new things you'll see this year is the big ressurection of electric cars: Starring the Nissan Leaf!

The Nissan Leaf will be the first true mass-market, pure electric care. It'll have room for 5 people and will get 100 miles out of a single charge. Charges will take between 6 and 12 hours, depending on what kind of outlet you're using. Nissan says that it will cost around $30,000, subtracting the tax cost.

The only troubles with this is the same one that happened before. For around 40 years, companies have been telling us that it'll take 5 years to get a reasonably good electric car on the road. Also, if you forget to plug the car in every day, you might be out of luck, because there aren't very many charge stations around.

Your guide to the year in science: Entertainment

Entertainment is a field full of movies, T.V, gaming, and some devices, two of which are the new iPod Nano, that has up to 16 gigabytes of memory, and a camera; the Nintendo DSi, a gaming device with an LCD touch screen, two cameras, a sound recorder, and a web browser! Some new advancements that could be coming are things like Real-time T.V. on the go, or the new Iron Man movie, with Robert Downey Jr!

Soon enough, you will no longer need a living room to be able to watch your favorite shows. Certain mobile devices like Netbooks or cellphones will be able to pick up 30 different T.V. stations in 17 major cities across the U.S.!

This year, Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the big screen in Iron Man 2. He'll be fighting a new Russian villain, and industry rival Justin Hammer. Be expecting the usual for Iron Man: Lots of high tech equipment and explosions! ^_^

The only setbacks to these new forms of entertainment is the money it'll take to accomplish them. With the economy these days, be expecting a heavier toll to buy tickets, or to afford some of the cool games you'll see.

Semester Goals for Mysics

  1. I will expose myself to new concepts of Math and Physics.

2. Get 100% on all Tests and Quests
  • 1st Step: Go to Mele's office hours once a week
3. I will work on binder organizations.
  • Whenever I get a new artifact to add to my binder, I will ask clarify and make sure that it gets into a section of my binder.

The Origin of Zero, Answers

Q: What strikes you about these articles?

A: Well, I think that it's impressive that 0 dates all the way back to the Sumarians!

Q: How do we decide who discovers what?

A: I think it kind of depends on various things: The context that the "0" is in can determine what language it came from, and therefore, who discovered it.

Q: Who really discovered 0?

A: Well, technically, the concept of 0 was first discovered by the Sumarians. However, the actual number 0 was first used by the Chinese, being the open circle that we use now.

Q: How did the world come to a concencus?

A: From my understanding, it kind of spread around from tradesmen going from country to country using that symbol for 0, and it kind of just caught on.

The Locker Problem

THE LOCKER PROBLEM: The Solution

 

            Here’s the scenario: High Tech High has 1000 new lockers, and they have 1000 students to test them out. The 1st student opens every locker. The 2nd student changes the state of every other locker, starting with locker 2. The 3rd student changes the state of every 3rd locker, starting with number 3. The fourth student changes the state of every 4th locker, starting with number 4, all the way until the 1000th student has changed the state of the 1000th locker. These are 10 lockers, with locker numbers 1, 4 and 10 open.

            I solved it this way. I started with 100 lockers first, to see how it would turn out. I looked at the open ones at the end, and saw that there were 10 open lockers: Numbers 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, and 100. I also noticed that these were all perfect squares. After testing my theory of all of the open lockers being perfect squares, I found I was correct, with 31 open lockers out of 1000.

 

Why are the open lockers perfect squares? Simple. In order for a locker to be open, it has to have been touched an odd number of times. The first locker was touched once (Student 1). The second one was touched twice (Student 1 and Student 2). The third one was touched twice (Student 1 and Student 3). The fourth locker was touched 3 times (Student 1, Student 2, and Student 4). Get it?

 

Finally, perfect squares have an odd number of factors, but the others don’t. as you may have noticed in my explanation above. Let’s compare the factors of 16, a perfect square, to the factors of 8, a regular number:

 

16 = 1, 2, 4, 4, 8, 16

8 = 1, 2, 4, 8

 

You could write out the factors of 16 like that, and say I’m wrong. However, one of those 4s is going to be canceled out, because there’re two of them. So, 16 would have five factors, and 8 would have 4. But why do perfect squares have an odd number of factors? Let’s group them into pairs.

 

16 = [1 x 16], [2 x 8], and [4 x ?]

8 = [1 x 8], and [2 x 4]

 

See? 16 has two pairs and a pair-less number, 4, while 8 has two pairs with no remaining numbers at the end of it.

 

Ta-Da! That’s the solution to The Locker Problem! I know it’s very cliché, but this was live, Saturday Night!

What is Math? What is Physics?


To me, math is art, art is math. Although it's not my favorite subject, it's still somewhat enjoyable. I'm good at math, I can get it down quickly. My favorite part of math, although some may say it's not actual math (I disagree of course!), is computer programming! I especially have taken a liking to C++. Also, a lot of people use math, including artists, programmers, business men and women, and even the people who made the computer that I'm using right now!

NOTE: PICTURE IS NOT MEANT TO OFFEND ANYONE. I AM BLONDE TOO.

Physics seems like it'll be cool. It's always fun to see how the world works, and phsics will teach me about gravity, electricity and other stuff! I like Physics. Um....I'm not sure what else to say about Physics, because I don't know what to expect....Hm...COCONUT!

Now, then...if you ever want help with drawing, I can definitely do that, and I want to learn Japanese, so Ms. Mele, if you read this thing, than I ask for your assistance.
